Hearing Protection

The effects of noise exposure are a serious problem. Noise exposure can lead to decreases in your hearing sensitivity, tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or other noises in your ears), and hyperacusis (over-sensitivity to sounds). The effects of noise may be noticeable instantaneously following exposure to a very loud sound or may develop over time following repeated instances of noise. In order to prevent the undesirable effects of noise it is important to protect your ears. You should wear hearing protection anytime you are going to be exposed to dangerous sound levels. Examples include at a noisy workplace (ex. construction), around heavy machinery/equipment, loud music, firearms, and while using lawn equipment or power tools.

Unfortunately, the most common options for hearing protection may not be as effective as you think. Foam earplugs must be inserted perfectly in order to provide the advertised level of protection. They are often not inserted deeply enough and may not fit everyone’s ears. Muff-style head pieces can be hot, bulky, and impractical depending on the activity.

Custom-fit hearing protection products are molded from an impression taken from your ear(s). The impression process is painless and takes less than twenty minutes to complete. Because your ears are unique, custom-made hearing protection can provide the benefit of a great fit, comfort, and repeatable effectiveness.

There are a variety of custom-made hearing protection products to best fit your needs.

  • Musician’s plugs: Come with a set of filters that provide flat frequency dampening to allow for the best sound quality while still providing protection from the high level of sounds.
  • Hunting plugs: Specially designed to allow you to hear speech and soft sounds but provide protection from loud sounds (i.e. gunshot).
  • DefendEar: Digital hearing protection for hunters. These devices enhance soft ambient sounds and conversation but suppress high-level impulse sounds.
  • Solid plugs: Best used for activities like mowing the lawn and working with power tools.
